Thompson 35, Spain Park 7: Alabama commit Taulia Tagovailoa throws 4 TDs

Class 7A No. 3-ranked Thompson rolled over visiting Spain Park as Alabama quarterback commit Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 323 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a score.

Thompson improved to 5-1, 3-1 in region play. Spain Park, losers of five straight, dropped to 1-5, 0-4, and likely finds itself out of Class 7A playoff contention.

Tagovailoa threw touchdown passes of 7 and 59 yards to Michael Pettway in the first half and added a 3-yard rush to give the Warriors a 21-7 halftime lead.

He threw touchdown passes of 11 yards to Pettway and 7 to JB Mitchell in the second half.

Star of the game: Tagovailoa could have had close to 400 yards if not for at least five drops by his receivers. Thompson coach Mark Freeman lamented that fact after the game.

Key moment: Spain Park cut Thompson’s lead to 21-7 late in the second quarter on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Harrison Barker to Jalen Henderson. The Jags forced a three-and-out and took it to Thompson’s 23, but threw three incompletions and turned the ball over.

By the numbers: Despite Thompson’s win, the Warriors had 12 penalties for 89 yards. Watch out for Thompson freshman linebacker Jeremiah Alexander, who had three sacks.

Stat sheet: Thompson receiver Michael Pettway, who has a touchdown reception in every game, had nine catches for 152 yards. Running back Shadrick Byrd had 14 carries for 106 yards. … Spain Park’s Kameron McDaniel had five catches for 109 yards. Spain Park quarterbacks Harrison Barker and Mason Pronk combined for 16-of-36 for 169 yards with an interception.

Coachspeak: "I think it was really excellent. He had some dropped balls to bring numbers down. We’re not going to start with numbers and we’re concerned with being leaders and winn ing football games, but I thought he would have had a really great night if we caught the balls we were supposed to have caught." - Thompson coach Mark Freeman on Tagovailoa’s performance.

"I'm just thinking about trying to get better. We’ve got our biggest rival next week at our place. … It's big. I think we will be ready.” - Spain Park coach Shawn Raney

They said it: "Our defense is based off of heart and tenacity. When we get inside the red zone anywhere, they’re not scoring. We’re not going to let them score." - Thompson defensive back Gage Motes

"We were just ready to get that dub and whatever the coach called, we were going to run to the best of our abilities." - Thompson offensive lineman Mason Bentley

What's next?: Spain Park hosts Hoover and Thompson travels to Vestavia Hills. Both games are on Oct. 12.
